What's Actually in Your Fly Spray? A Vet's Breakdown of Common Ingredients

Fly spray is one of those products most of us grab out of habit. It's been part of the routine for years, the bottle looks familiar, and we rarely stop to actually read what's inside.

But as a veterinarian (and someone who sprays this stuff on my own animals every single day in the summer) I started paying closer attention to ingredient lists a long time ago. What I found changed how I think about fly control entirely, and it's part of why I eventually formulated my own.

Here's a plain breakdown of what's commonly in fly spray, and what it actually means.

Pyrethrin and Pyrethroids

This is the ingredient most people don't realize is a problem. Pyrethrin comes from chrysanthemum flowers, so it's often marketed as a "natural" ingredient and technically, it is derived from a plant. But natural doesn't automatically mean it belongs on your animals or your land.

Pyrethrin is prohibited on certified organic operations. It works by attacking the nervous system of insects, and while it's formulated for fly-sized targets, it's still a neurotoxic compound being applied directly to your animals' skin, often daily during peak fly season.

Synthetic pyrethroids (the lab-made cousin of pyrethrin) are even more aggressive and longer-lasting, which is exactly why they're used so widely. But that persistence is also what makes them worth a second look.

Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO)

PBO usually shows up paired with pyrethrin, and its job isn't to kill flies directly. It blocks an insect's ability to break down and process the pyrethrin, which makes the whole formula more effective. In other words, it's there to make the primary insecticide hit harder.

PBO is classified by the EPA as a possible human carcinogen. It's rarely called out clearly on the front of a bottle, and most farmers have no idea it's in the product they're using.

Petroleum Distillates

Common in oil-based fly sprays as a carrier for the active ingredients. These are byproducts of petroleum refining, used because they help a product spread evenly and stick to an animal's coat. They're effective at their job, but most people spraying them onto their cattle every day don't realize that's what's actually in the bottle.

Synthetic Fragrance

Labels that say "fresh scent" or "citrus scent" are almost always referring to synthetic fragrance compounds, not real essential oils. These additives exist purely to make the product smell appealing on the shelf. They offer zero benefit against flies and are simply along for the ride.

Why This Matters

None of this is meant to scare anyone. Fly control is genuinely necessary, and I understand why these ingredients have been the industry standard for so long. They work, they're inexpensive, and they've been around for decades.

But "it works" and "it's the only option" are two very different things. Once you understand what's actually in a conventional fly spray, it becomes a lot easier to ask whether there's a better way to solve the same problem.

What We Do Differently

Every product in the Shoo-Fly line (the Concentrate, the 50/50, and the Plus Spray) is built entirely without pyrethrins, PBO, petroleum distillates, or synthetic fragrance. Instead, it's a botanical blend of lemongrass, citronella, eucalyptus, rosemary, tea tree, peppermint, and neem oil, chosen because these ingredients actually repel flies. Not just because they smell good or look good on a label.

Because of that formulation, every DSE product is safe for use on certified organic operations. Nothing prohibited, nothing borderline, nothing you'd have to think twice about.

The Bottom Line

You don't have to accept "that's just what fly spray is" as the final answer. Reading the label and really reading it past the front-of-bottle marketing is the first step to understanding what you're putting on your animals every day of fly season.
